‘Courage, Wisdom & Indomitable Truth’

I can still force myself to put up with the glorification of Sanjay Dutt in Sanju, but to portray Bal Thackeray as a symbol of ‘courage, wisdom & indomitable truth’ is something that boils my blood.
Since the time I learned to read the newspaper, the only image I have of him is an uncontested religious bigot obsessed with his ethnic supremacy. His support to Babri Masjid demolition and the consequent role in the Mumbai riots, and his unapologetic, rather proud admittance of the same – hello, does nobody remember that?
I still remember the ‘respect’ Shiv Sena showed towards M.F.Hussain or many other non-Hindu artists and celebrities for that matter.
How one young woman was arrested instantly for refusing to express condolences on his death!
Yes, that’s the kind of terror he fostered in the hearts of the Mumbaikars, I believe. Correct me if I am wrong in this assumption, because, sitting in Kolkata as a child, I surely did despise him.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, yes now I am talking to you. Not bringing the whole ‘art and artist are separate’ angle into this, still, I would say you have never disappointed me more. Not as an actor, but as a person. Just putting up the word ‘controversial’ in the trailer doesn’t cleanse the man of the mindset he nurtured and propagated.

Yes, bombard me with all your ‘anti-national’, ‘anti-Hindu’ tags. I already have rape threats from right-wingers lying in my inbox.
But, the Thackeray trailer is just another indication of how secularism is dying the slow death in the saffron glow.
